Notes
--> J Baker scored 3 fives in the Otago first innings
--> WW Armstrong scored 1 five in the Melbourne Cricket Club first innings
--> GC Henty scored 1 five in the Melbourne Cricket Club first innings
--> HG Siedeberg scored 1 five in the Otago second innings

Heavy rain meant an early finish on the first day after only 2 overs of the Melbourne Cricket Club first innings
GC Henty took over as wicketkeeper during the Otago second innings when the score was 105/2 to enable WE Wilkinson to come on to bowl
Local practice meant hits over the boundary on the full were only scored as 5
D Mailer scored one 5 when he took a quick single and a throw at the stumps went to the boundary
WW Armstrong, with his team in danger of losing being 59-8, invoked the clause which both captains had agreed to play under, that no batsmen would have to bat with only five minutes left to play. Although both Aitken and Irwin had been unable to field in the Otago second innings due to injury, it seems that Armstrong was within his rights to invoke the clause that the captains had agreed to. Earlier, the first four batsmen had made their way to the wicket very quickly indeed, but when the scoreboard read 3 wickets for 4 runs, the remaining batsmen were very slow to take their positions, which provoked hostile reactions from the spectators.
