At the end of the season, New Zealand Cricket decided that the teams from the four major metropolitan areas, who had taken part in this competition since 1995/96, would be excluded from the 2000/01 season. Therefore Dunedin Metropolitan would be unable to defend the cup with a national zonal tournament to be held to find a new holder.
