Biography: | He succeeded his father as 10th Viscount Cobham in July 1949, having been styled 'Honourable' from 1922 as a son of the ninth viscount. Governor-General of New Zealand 1957-62; later, director of Lloyds Bank, Eagle Star (insurance) and other companies. MCC president 1954-55, treasurer 1963-64. Appointed GCMG 1957 on his New Zealand appointment, and KG (Knight of the Garter) 1964. Privy Counsellor 1967; GCVO 1972 for services to the royal household. |
